Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to take decisive action following the circulation of a viral video showing two gay men kissing, an incident the MP describes as a direct affront to Ghana’s spiritual and cultural values.

In a petition dated Thursday, June 26, 2025, he expressed worry over the development and urged the president to publicly condemn the incident and take legislative action to prevent similar occurrences in future.

“People say, the NPP government failed to act. That failure, they argue, was part of the reasons they were voted out, you now have the chance to prove that your leadership will not only be different but will stand for something higher: a defence of our spiritual and cultural integrity”, he noted.

The MP called on President Mahama to address the nation and reaffirm Ghana’s commitment to traditional values.

“I am pleading with you, Your Excellency, let your voice be heard now. Condemn what has happened. Speak to the nation. Reaffirm your commitment to upholding our values,” he urged. “And more importantly, take swift legislative action to ensure this never happens again.”

Vincent Assafuah recalled how Parliament previously passed the controversial “Dumsor Levy” under a certificate of urgency and insisted the moral protection of the nation deserves the same, if not greater, attention.

“If Parliament and the Executive were able to pass the ‘Dunsor Levy’ under a certificate of urgency, surely the moral defence of this country deserves the same urgency if not more.

“We cannot sit by and watch our national symbols hijacked for an agenda that offends the conscience of this nation”, he stressed.

Calling the moment “spiritual” rather than political, the MP stated that the issue transcends party lines and strikes at the heart of the nation’s identity.

“This moment is not political. It is spiritual. It is about the soul of Ghana,” he declared. “And I urge you, in the name of the God who gave us this land, to act in defence of our people’s values and beliefs.”

The video in question, which has ignited conversations online shows two men, identified as South African nationals Lue and Rue, sharing a kiss under the Independence Square flaunting Ghana flag.

Conservative groups and religious leaders have condemned the act, describing it as a threat to Ghana’s moral fabric.
