The Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem South, Lawyer Kwaku Asante Boateng, has once again stirred controversy after being captured in a viral video urging his polling station executives to throw their support behind his in-law, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.

In the video, the MP is seen addressing a gathering of party delegates, passionately appealing to them to rally behind the Assin Central legislator, who is seeking to lead the NPP into the 2024 general elections.

This open declaration of support comes just days after Asante Boateng sparked nationwide outrage over what many have described as tribal and divisive remarks made against Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking on Adom FM, the MP allegedly described Dr Bawumia as a “foreigner” and a “slave” who should be serving others rather than being imposed on the party as flagbearer.

His comments drew widespread condemnation from the public, civil society organizations, and within the party itself. The national executives of the NPP have since distanced the party from his remarks, describing them as unfortunate, reckless, and contrary to the unity and inclusiveness the NPP stands for.

Political watchers say the MP’s latest move—openly canvassing votes for Kennedy Agyapong—lends credence to suspicions that his earlier outburst was part of a broader strategy within the Agyapong campaign to discredit Dr Bawumia ahead of the primaries.

Several party members have called for disciplinary action against the MP, insisting that his conduct undermines the NPP’s cohesion at a critical time when unity is needed to maintain power in the 2024 elections.

As the race for the NPP flagbearership intensifies, the incident underscores the growing tension within the party, with delegates expected to decide between the two leading contenders—Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong—in what is shaping up to be one of the most fiercely contested internal elections in recent history.
