Ghanaian music star KiDi has for the first time opened up about the difficult journey he went through after discovering that he was going to become a father while he was still a university student.
The award-winning singer, known in real life as Dennis Nana Dwamena, revealed that the news came at a time when he was still trying to understand himself, complete his education, and find his footing as an upcoming musician.
Speaking on the Konnected Minds Podcast, KiDi disclosed that the reality of fatherhood hit him hard because he was not prepared for the responsibility that came with raising a child while he was still building his own life.
“I was scared. I was in uni. I was scared. I was shaken,” KiDi revealed.
The “Touch It” hitmaker explained that the situation had a major impact on his academic life because his mind was occupied with thoughts about the future and how he would handle the new responsibility ahead of him.
According to KiDi, he was not yet the established artiste the world knows today at the time. He was still trying to discover his musical identity and figure out his direction in life.
“It did affect my education because I had resits. It was a thing that was heavy on my thoughts. I wasn’t even KiDi then. I was trying to figure out what my sound was going to be,” he said.
The musician admitted that one of his biggest fears was the thought of raising a child when he was still learning how to navigate adulthood himself.
He however revealed that the love and support from his family, especially his mother, became a major source of strength during that challenging period.
He explained that knowing he had people who would always stand by him gave him the motivation to overcome the difficulties and complete his education.
The singer further disclosed that the situation pushed him to gather the courage needed to return to school, complete his remaining academic obligations, and successfully write his resit examinations.
KiDi also shared that although he found out about the pregnancy early, he was unable to accompany the child’s mother through the antenatal process because they were living in different countries.
