Victoria Hammah and Joyce Bawa Mogtari have come to the defense of First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo after she faced criticism for her reaction to comments made about her husband during his final State of the Nation Address (SONA).

The outgoing president, Nana Akufo-Addo, received a chastening reception when he appeared before Parliament for the SONA last Friday.

Deputy Minority Leader Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah remarked that Akufo-Addo’s tenure served as a timely reminder of how not to govern a country.

Following the President’s address, the First Lady was captured on video appearing to snub the Speaker of Parliament, ostensibly for not controlling the NDC MPs when they criticized her husband.

In a separate video, Mrs. Akufo-Addo was heard expressing her displeasure about the remarks made about her husband. “You sit there and allow people to speak anyhow,” she said angrily as she walked out.

Her comments have since drawn public attention, with some criticizing her remarks and accusing her of not accepting constructive criticism.

Surprisingly, however, the First Lady has received support from two leading women in the NDC, Victoria Hammah and Joyce Bawa Mogtari.

In a Facebook post, Ms. Hammah, a former Deputy Minister for Communication, said the First Lady acted as any loyal wife would.

“Beautiful Rebecca did what every loyal woman must do: support her husband in public, no matter what. I would do the same,” she wrote.

While many of Ms. Hammah’s followers disagreed with her stance, Joyce Bawa Mogtari, an aide to President-elect John Mahama, also backed Rebecca’s actions.

“Let me support this with Dzata Cement,” she commented beneath the post, adding a laughing emoji.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo’s tenure will officially end on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, when John Mahama is sworn in as Ghana’s new president following his landslide victory in the 2024 elections.
