Ghanaian-American rapper Vic Mensa has reflected on how he was robbed at the Kotoka International Airport during his first-ever visit to Ghana.

In a discussion on the One54 Africa channel shared on YouTube on February 18, 2026, Vic Mensa revealed that he was just 11 years old at the time of this visit.

Recounting what transpired at the airport, the Grammy Award nominee explained that an individual defrauded him under the guise of helping his family secure a taxi.

Why are many African countries anti-gay? – Vic Mensa questions

“I was 11. I got robbed immediately after getting off the plane. Welcome to Ghana. It’s dark. They’re speaking another language. My family is looking for a cab, and there’s a scammer outside the airport. He came up to me, I’m a little kid, and he’s like, ‘I can get you a taxi. Just give me the money.’

“I’m like, ‘Yeah, come on. I’m going to be the one who gets us the taxi. Mom, Dad, you don’t know what you’re doing,” he said.

Vic Mensa further stated that he was traumatised by the incident, noting that the money taken from him was all he had at the time.

“All the $20 I had was basically my life savings. I felt like I had a chip on my shoulder about it for two months, because I was just 11. I feel like being a Black boy in Chicago shaped how I reacted to it,” he added.
