Vendors at Malibu Farmers Market are furious after their stalls were moved from a scenic park location to a concrete parking lot.

The Malibu Farmers Market, which is frequented by the likes of Pierce Brosnan, Kaia Gerber and Simon Cowell, has spent the past three years among the coastal prairies and bluffs of Legacy Park.

The A-listers are among other regular shoppers hoping to pick up a $14 carton of eggs or some $12 jam.

The market has been unfolding weekly at Legacy Park since construction at a Santa Monica College campus forced it to relocate.

But on Saturday, officials said their permission to operate at the picturesque park had expired as the construction has now ended and they were booted to the City Hall parking lot.

Vendors were reportedly so upset by the change of location that dozens failed to turn up to their weekly slot, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The market’s organizers told the outlet it was ‘shocked and blindsided’ by the decision, while shoppers were equally dismayed.

Fashion designer Betsey Johnson previously wrote a letter to the Farmers Market which was published in The Malibu Times expressing the strength of feeling about the Legacy Park location.

The market has been ordered to leave Legacy Park immediately, and set up shop at City Hall while the process to return to its original location is getting finalized

The farmers market has been ordered to leave Legacy Park immediately. Last Sunday vendors set up shop in the new interim location, a parking lot outside City Hall

She wrote: ‘As a designer, I appreciate the aesthetics of the market, and my heart was filled with joy when I saw it at Legacy Park.

‘The city of Malibu did an exceptional job in creating an aesthetically pleasing environment for the market.’

‘The market has finally found its true home, and it brings so much joy to our community.’

Facebook users were equally passionate under a City of Malibu post announcing the new location.

One person wrote: ‘I understand the need to follow the law but the city could also put its political will around making what the RESIDENTS want from the market happen as opposed to moving it to another on shaded parking lot.’

Another echoed the sentiment: ‘We were delighted with the park side location, it worked. Surely, the city can help that happen again. It’s all about community support and community interaction, City Council should focus more on community.’

But officials said public safety concerns and zoning laws overshadowed the requests.

An announcement from the City of Malibu stated: ‘The current site was not designed or approved for farmers market operations and was never intended to be a permanent location.’

Legacy Park was purchased from an investor, the late Jerry Perenchio, in 2002, under a deed that restricted commercial activity on the land, according to The Santa Monica Daily Press.

The relocation was temporarily permitted by Perenchio’s son, John Perenchio, but later declined further exceptions.

The market takes up about 40 percent of the available parking space, making it difficult to access nearby businesses.

Prior to Legacy Park, the market had been running at a lot at the Los Angeles County Malibu Library.

In the meantime, the market has been ordered to stop operating at Legacy Park immediately and move over to the spot right outside City Hall.

The move sparked an immediate backlash among vendors.

‘At least 30 to 35 vendors didn’t come,’ Debra Bianco, co-founder and president of Cornucopia Foundation which launched the market said.

‘It’s a hidden location, like it’s way up a hill, so we didn’t get the foot traffic we usually would have. And it was way too short of notice.’

Shoppers also claimed they were left confused by the move and weren’t given enough notice.

One frequent shopper wrote: ‘No one told us it was at City Hall as of yesterday, not one sign directing us there. Whole Foods is grateful.’

Officials said that Legacy Park was only ever designed to be a temporary home for the market while construction was ongoing at their previous location

Last Sunday, Malibu Farmers Market left Legacy Park for a new location, a parking lot outside City Hall in Malibu

Shoppers were equally upset about the move, with some claiming they were not given enough notice

Another Malibu resident replied: ‘Because no one wants the market [at City Hall]. We liked it where it was and don’t buy the liability arguments.’

However, city spokesman Matt Myerhoff told the Daily Mail: ‘Legacy Park remains unavailable as the deed restriction on the Legacy Park property restricts any commercial activity, including farmers markets. The city does have the ability to change the restriction.

‘The Malibu Farmers Market successfully took place Sunday, August 23 at the City Hall parking lot.

‘The City was pleased to provide a temporary, safe and code-compliant location that enabled the farmers market to take place and serve the community.’

He added that the City Hall spot remains available as a temporary location while a license with LA County for the market to return to its previous home at the Los Angeles County lot at the Malibu Library is processed.

‘On Sunday, City Code Enforcement staff helped Cornucopia and vendors set up, provided bathrooms, trash cans and signage, and directed customers who arrived at Legacy Park to the new location,’ Myerhoff added.

‘The City also widely posted on social media and Nextdoor information about the temporary location and encouraged people to come shop.’

The Daily Mail has reached out to the Cornucopia Foundation for comment.
