Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has described the election of Commissioner of Police Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), to the INTERPOL Africa Committee as both a personal triumph and a national honour.

In a post on her X page on Thursday, September 4, 2025, announcing Lydia Yaako Donkor’s visit to her office, she stated, “I was pleased to receive Commissioner of Police Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), following her election to the INTERPOL Africa Committee. I expressed my pride in her election, noting that this milestone is both a personal victory and a national honour.

“While the position comes with higher expectations, I have confidence in her ability to rise to the occasion and make even greater contributions at the continental level.”

Professor Opoku-Agyemang further urged support for women in leadership, stressing that every breakthrough opens doors for others.

“We must support women who attain such positions of leadership and influence, as each success opens doors for others,” she added.

Lydia Yaako Donkor’s election, held on Friday, August 29, 2025, is historic, as it makes her the first Ghanaian to serve on the committee.

In her acceptance speech, COP Donkor underscored the need for context-specific solutions to crime, explaining that although global challenges may be similar, the economic and social dynamics vary across countries.

She pledged to strengthen regional cooperation through enhanced intelligence sharing and joint operations with the support of INTERPOL’s security systems.

The INTERPOL Africa Regional Committee serves as a platform for collaboration among law enforcement agencies across the continent. It sets strategic priorities in the fight against crime, advises the African Regional Conference, and addresses issues of criminality and police cooperation specific to Africa.

Alongside Ghana, member states elected to the committee include Egypt, Kenya, and South Africa, who will serve four-year terms, while Botswana, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and Sudan secured two-year terms.
