Ghana on Friday joined the Chinese community to celebrate the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 65th anniversary of China-Ghana Diplomatic Relations.

In attendance were the Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Mr Augustine Goosie Tanoh, Presidential Advisor, 24-Hour Economy Secretariat, Mr Hassan Rashid Pelpuo, Minister of Labour and Employment, and Mr Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communications, Digitalisation and Innovation and people from all walks of life.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang praised the relationship between Ghana and China, saying that the foundation laid by Chairman Mao and Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah has the most enduring diplomatic partnership.

She said the relationship between the two countries were based on mutual respect, trust and shared prosperity.

On trade, the Vice President noted that Ghana was determined to ensure that “our trade and our relations translate into sustainable, local development, and we want to emphasize our brilliant, determined youth.”

“We acknowledge the rules of China in development of our infrastructure, and I refer to rules, bridges, hospitals, educational facilities, even cultural exchanges, but in all of this, as I said, we want our emphasis to go on our youth.”

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the government was implementing the 24-hour economic programme, which emphasises the creation of jobs, modernisation, connectivity, exports, and their attendant opportunities.

She said that meant that there was potential to deepen relationship and collaboration with China, in many areas, including energy, renewable power, digital technology, trade facilitation, within the African Continental free Trade area and others.

In his remarks, Mr Tong Defa, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana said China, in the face of mounting global challenges, remains steadfast in standing with developing countries, particularly those of African nations.

He said China advocates redressing historical injustices suffered by Africa, and is committed to building a more just and equitable global governance system and advance toward a community with a shared future for humanity.

Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China 76 years ago, Mr Defa said its development has captured global attention by achieving two miracles, rapid economic growth and long-term social stability. It has risen to the world’s second-largest economy and the top industrial nation.

Aside that, Mr Defa said China lifted 98.99 million rural residents out of poverty, achieving the poverty reduction target of the United Nations’ 2030.

According to him, half of the world’s newly installed renewable energy capacity now comes from China, with 70 per cent of electronic vehicles of (EVs) in the world sold in China.

Against a severe and complex background, the Chinese Ambassador said China’s import and export volume increased by 3.5 per cent in the first eight months of 2025, demonstrating the stability and resilience of China’s economy.

Mr Defa said CPC rigorously implemented the “Eight-Point Rules” in recent years to advance full and strict self-governance, tackle corruption and promote integrity, and persistently pursued self-reform, which has led in a renewed ethos in both the party and the government.

Turning his attention to 65 years of diplomatic friendship between China and Ghana, Mr Defa said Ghana is the second sub-Saharan African country to establish diplomatic relations with China.

He said the traditional friendship between the two countries was jointly forged by the older generation of leaders of Chairman Mao Zedong, Premier Zhou Enlai, and President Kwame Nkrumah.
