President John Dramani Mahama has directed Maripoma Enterprise Limited, the contractors working the Ofankor–Nsawam Road project, to use high-quality materials in the ongoing construction.
He gave the directive during his working visit to the project site on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, where was accompanied by the Minister of Roads, Kwame Governs Agbodza.
“As the government commits to paying you well, you too must commit to moving faster on the road and also use quality materials. One of the major problems with road contractors in this country is the quality of materials. You build the road, and after a short while, the road starts to deteriorate. Your company is one of the world’s most well-known contracting companies. We hope that this will be a mark of the quality of your brand,” he said.
President Mahama also pointed out the need for the contractors to meet the project timelines to minimise the inconvenience to road users.

“I can see that drivers are happy now, and I hope that from this point until the completion of the project, you will maintain a smooth flow of traffic even as construction continues, so it does not disrupt motorists.
“We will hold you accountable. You have committed to finishing by the end of the second quarter next year, and that is what we expect,” he said.
The Ofankor-Nsawam Road serves as a major arterial road for communities in the Ga West Municipal Assembly, including Pokuase, Amasaman, Medie, and Sarpeiman.

It also serves as a vital link for trade between Ghana and its neighbouring landlocked countries: Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, and for transit cargo to move from the country’s ports to those destination.
Construction on the road officially began in July 2022 under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration, with an initial completion target of July 2024.
However, delays caused by funding challenges have pushed back the completion date multiple times, prompting protests from drivers and residents over heavy traffic congestion and environmental pollution linked to the ongoing construction.
