The United States Embassy has cautioned Ghanaians planning to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup against overstaying their visas, warning that violations of U.S. immigration laws could jeopardize future travel.

Speaking at a media engagement in Accra on Friday, Charge d’Affaires Rolf Olson stressed that while a U.S. visa permits a traveler to board a flight and request entry, it does not determine the length of stay. He explained that Customs and Border Protection officers at the port of entry decide how long visitors may remain, noting that although B visas generally allow up to six months, shorter periods may be granted.

Mr. Olson emphasized that travelers must depart before their authorized stay expires, as overstaying is treated seriously and could negatively affect subsequent visa applications. He added that most B visas issued to Ghanaians are valid for multiple entries over five years.

The tournament, to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, will feature 48 teams and 104 matches.

Mr. Olson disclosed that additional consular officers have been deployed to Accra, significantly increasing interview slots. He urged applicants to apply early and avoid visa “fixers,” stressing that no special visa rules apply for World Cup travelers.
