The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has condemned what it describes as the persistent and egregious attacks on journalists, particularly pointing out the latest assault on JoyNews reporter, Latif Iddrisu.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on June 10, 2025, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour expressed worry over the conduct of individuals who continue to intimidate media personnel.

“We will not sit down for this trend to continue; unfortunately, some elements of our society continue to unrepentantly, shamefully, and callously mete out unwarranted attacks on journalists in the line of their duty. These are not just assaults on individuals; they are an attack on democracy,” he said.

Dwumfour stated that the association has initiated several steps to address assaults on journalists.

“Journalism is not a crime. We have taken various steps: stakeholder engagements, meetings with the police, and military hierarchy, blacklisting politicians, and educating our members to end these abuses. But sadly, the attacks persist,” he stated.

The GJA president reminded the public and the authorities that journalists play a critical role in democratic governance and national development.

He emphasised that the association will explore all available options, including legal action, blacklisting repeat offenders, and rallying civil society to protect press freedom.

“If there is a need to blacklist certain individuals again, we will not hesitate,” he said.

He also called on the Ghana Police Service to show professionalism and respect in their dealings with media practitioners and not treat them as threats or enemies.

“This country cannot make progress if journalists continue to be targeted while doing their job,” he said.

Dwumfour further urged all Ghanaians to rise above partisan considerations and recognise journalists as essential watchdogs whose only agenda is to inform and serve the public interest.

On May 27, 2025, during a demonstration staged by the Minority in Parliament at the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Latif Iddrisu was assaulted.

Meanwhile, the suspect in the assault case has been remanded by the police.
