The University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) has been thrown into deep mourning following the tragic and untimely death of Nelson Blay Nokotey, a Level 300 Top-Up Journalism student who was fatally knocked down by a hit-and-run driver.

The devastating incident has left the entire UniMAC community in shock and grief.

In a statement issued by the Public Affairs Directorate of the University, management, on behalf of the Governing Council, faculty, staff and students, extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends and loved ones of the late Nelson.

The statement described Nelson Blay Nokotey as a promising and valued member of the university community, whose death represents a painful loss not only to UniMAC but to the nation at large.

According to the statement, university management, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eric Opoku Mensah, has held meetings with the bereaved family and separately engaged the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) and the wider student body to commiserate with them and reaffirm the university’s solidarity during this difficult period.

The Vice-Chancellor assured that UniMAC, through the Dean of Students Affairs and the Chief Security Officer, is working closely with the Ghana Police Service to support investigations aimed at identifying, apprehending and prosecuting the perpetrator in accordance with the law.

The statement further condemned the incident as a grave violation of the sanctity of human life and pledged the university’s full cooperation with law enforcement agencies until justice is served.

“Beyond the immediate response, management has re-engaged relevant state and municipal agencies, including security, transport and road safety authorities, to review and implement enhanced safety measures within and around the South Legon community to prevent future tragedies,” the statement added.

It also called on students, staff and the general public to remain calm, law-abiding and cooperative as investigations continue, while honouring Nelson’s memory with dignity.

The university gave a solemn assurance that it would relentlessly pursue justice and strengthen safety measures on and around campus.

“Nelson’s life mattered, and his memory will forever remain etched in the conscience of the UniMAC community,” the statement concluded.
