The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Mining Tools Ghana Pty Ltd to test and optimize mining equipment designed for Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) management.

Mining Tools Ghana, an indigenous company, introduced the Filter Press Plant, a cutting-edge solution to enhance the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of managing tailings in mining operations. The plant separates solid waste from liquid in the mining process, offering potential opportunities for recycling and sustainable use.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr. Ebenezer Teye, Business Development Manager of Mining Tools Ghana, expressed excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing the importance of academic validation.

“The reason for this MOU is to generate solid and verifiable data on the equipment’s performance while also supporting research at UMaT,” Mr. Teye said. “This partnership will enable us to explore additional value-added uses for both the liquid and solid byproducts of the filtration process.”

He added that Mining Tools Ghana, founded in 2017, is committed to bridging the gap between academia and industry. The company’s CEO, initiated the engagement with UMaT after a successful demonstration of the equipment at Perseus Mine, facilitated by the Ghana Chamber of Mines.

The Vice Chancellor of UMaT, Prof. Richard Kwasi Amankwa, welcomed the initiative, highlighting that the university is always open to industry collaborations.

“This time, the company came to us, which is quite remarkable,” Prof. Amankwa noted. “We have assigned two master’s students to the project to optimize the equipment, identify operational challenges, and develop solutions before commercialization. This ensures that future buyers will have access to research-backed operational guidelines.”

The research will span a year, during which the students will work on refining the equipment’s efficiency.

The Filter Press Plant, patented in South Africa, was brought into Ghana by Mining Tools Ghana’s partner, Filter Quip Pty Ltd.

The successful implementation of this technology is expected to revolutionize TSF management, reducing environmental impact and operational costs for mining companies.
