After the seventh round, the Japanese prospect was winning on points—70-63, 68-65 twice. But Japan-based Ugandan and former Olympian in 2021 Tokyo Games, David Ssemujju (9-1, 5 KOs), 145, turned the tables and scored a dramatic come-from-behind TKO victory over Kosei Nogami (4-1, 2 KOs; amateur 49-18), 146.5, at 2:58 of the eighth round in a scheduled ten to acquire the vacant WBO Asis Pacific welterweight belt and also retain his Japanese national title on Thursday in Tokyo, Japan.
Taking the initiative from the outset, Nogami, a hard-punching southpaw, steadily piled up points by exploding his trademark southpaw right hook to the face. Nogami, however, ran out of gas with Ssemujju desperately accelerating his retaliation to batter the exhausted rival nearly at will to prompt the referee’s well-received stoppage.
