Associate Professor at the University of Ghana School of Law, Prof Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua, has voiced concern over recent legal actions taken by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo amid ongoing impeachment proceedings against her.

Speaking on JoyNews on May 24, 2025, Prof. Appiagyei-Atua acknowledged that the Chief Justice has the constitutional right to challenge the process through the courts.

However, he questioned the intent behind some of the legal steps being taken, suggesting they may be aimed at derailing or stalling the inquiry.

“She certainly has the right to defend herself legally,” he stated.

“But some of the suits that have been filed appear to be attempts to delay or frustrate the process.”

The Chief Justice recently filed a case at the Supreme Court seeking to bar two justices from taking part in the committee established to investigate petitions for her removal.

The move has stirred debate, with opinions divided over whether it represents a strategic misuse of legal procedures or a valid defense of her judicial rights.

Prof Appiagyei-Atua cautioned that while the outcome of the Chief Justice’s legal challenge is yet to be determined, the timing and nature of her actions could undermine public confidence in the integrity of the process.

“I don’t know what the final outcome will be,” he said, “but it does give the impression that the process is being deliberately slowed down.”
