GIHOC Distilleries’ former managing director Maxwell Kofi Jumah’s lawyer, Akwasi Owusu Fordjour, has refuted claims that his client misappropriated corporate cars from the state-owned booze company.

This comes after the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service revealed that Mr. Jumah had stolen automobiles from the state-owned beverage distributor.

The police confirmed that three of the cars mentioned earlier had been recovered.

On Monday, June 30, Akwasi Owusu Fordjour defended his client’s actions and clarified the vehicles’ ownership status in an interview with Channel One Newsroom.

He claims that two of the cars that were recovered belong to Mr. Jumah privately and that there is proof that they were obtained lawfully.

Even though it was registered in GIHOC’s name, his client did not have the third car when it was taken into custody.

“Two of the vehicles belong to Maxwell Kofi Jumah, and they are not state vehicles. These vehicles are in his name. He procured them through legal means, and we have documents to support those claims. The other one is in the name of GIHOC; however, per his conditions of service, he could have triggered Clause XII of his conditions of service in obtaining that, but Toyota Tekoa has been in possession of GIHOC for about a month or two now.

“What was in his custody was a Hyundai Genesis and an Audi, which is a salvaged vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the premises of GIHOC this morning by my very good self and the Police CID. That vehicle has not been on the road for eight good years. So there is more to it, so I am sure after investigations, we can speak properly to it,” citinewsroom.com quoted him as saying.

Following his arrest in relation to the suspected theft of company vehicles, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, the former Managing Director of GIHOC Distilleries, was given bail in the amount of GHS500,000 with two sureties.

He appeared at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters, where he had been detained, and was released on bail on Monday, June 30.
