Two prominent Regional Chairmen of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are currently facing separate legal battles, a development the party has described as deliberate attempts by the ruling government to weaponise state security agencies and the judiciary against political opponents.

This GhanaWeb article chronicles the two times these party leaders have been caught in legal battles that resulted in their detention.

    Bernard Antwi Bosiako

On May 27, 2025, Bernard Antwi Bosiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi was arrested by officials from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), as part of ongoing investigations into multiple alleged criminal offences, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

The arrest by EOCO followed shortly after an invitation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for questioning at their headquarters in Accra.

Chairman Wontumi had been at the CID headquarters for further questioning over his alleged involvement in illegal mining otherwise known as galamsey, and mining in forest reserves without authorisation.

    Abronye remanded again

He was released by EOCO after spending six days in custody after meeting the bail conditions of GH₵50 million with two sureties.

During President John Dramani Mahama‘s recent media engagement he stated that “charges have been drafted and ready for filing in the case of Republic v Wontumi and Akonta Mining”.

    Kwame Baffoe

Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, remains in police custody following his arrest on September 8, 2025.

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that the outspoken political leader was arrested on charges of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace, and subsequently remanded by the Accra Circuit Court.

Prior to his arrest and detention, Abronye reportedly sought political asylum in eight countries, Côte d’Ivoire, the United States, France, Italy, Canada, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Germany, citing threats to his safety and political persecution.

On September 12, 2025, Abronye appeared in court in a Black Maria under heavy security escort and remanded for a week.

He is expected to reappear in court on September 19, 2025.
