England head coach Thomas Tuchel says his side must be fully prepared for a demanding group challenge at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being paired with Croatia, Ghana and Panama in Group L.

Reacting to Friday’s draw in Washington, Tuchel acknowledged the pedigree and strength of the Black Stars as well as Croatia’s long-standing reputation as tournament specialists.

“Difficult group with Croatia and Ghana, two regulars in World Cups and two proud and strong nations,” Tuchel said. “Panama, I don’t know much about Panama at the moment but we will find out about it before the tournament starts, of course.”

England will be among the favourites to progress, but Tuchel’s early assessment reflects the competitive nature of the group. Croatia have reached the semi-finals or better in two of the last three tournaments, while Ghana have proven on multiple occasions that they can push Europe’s top sides at the highest level.

Ghana defeated the United States and the Czech Republic to reach the round of 16 in 2006 and famously reached the quarter-finals in 2010, only falling short after extra time against Uruguay. Their pace, physical intensity and individual quality remain key threats.

England’s meeting with Ghana on 23 June is already shaping up to be one of the standout fixtures of the group phase, with both sides expected to be in contention for a place in the newly expanded round of 32.

Tuchel says England will take nothing for granted, and Ghana will be well aware of the attention that match will command.
