The family of a ‘devoted’ father who died in a horror house fire have paid tribute.

Emergency services raced to the blaze at a property in Highters Heath, Birmingham, just before 1.10am on Friday.

Daniel Gardner, 37, was found badly injured and taken to hospital for treatment but tragically died a short time later.

Stephen Dale, 47, from Birmingham, appeared in court charged yesterday charged with murdering Mr Gardner.

He has been remanded in custody ahead of another hearing today, West Midlands Police said.

Police have also arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody.

Daniel’s family, who are being supported by specialist officers, paid tribute to him in a statement: ‘Daniel, devoted son, daddy, brother, and nephew. Words cannot describe the unbearable pain and devastation we all feel.

‘You gave everything and never expected anything in return.

‘Gives me comfort that you are with Nan & Grandad now who will once again look after you for me.

‘My heart will always be broken but I hope I can find the strength to carry on without you.

‘All my love is with you Dan. Miss you every minute of the day. Mum & Nick Ryan & Liv Elliot & Charlie Lynn & Phi.’

West Midlands Police said: ‘Our thoughts remain with Daniel’s family at this tragic time and we are offering them our full support as our investigation continues.

‘We are still asking anyone with information or footage which could help our enquiries to call us on 101, quoting log 174 of 19 September.

‘Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.’
