Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr George Akuffo Dampare has called on the football community to treat the fatal stabbing of Asante Kotoko fan Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley, as a matter of criminality.

Pooley tragically lost his life during a violent clash between fans at the Ghana Premier League match between Nsoatreman and Asante Kotoko on Sunday, February 2, 2025, at the Nana Konamansah Park.

In response, the Ghana Police Service has taken swift action, arresting six individuals, including Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the owner of Nsoatreman.

While addressing the President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, the IGP urged the football community to recognize the incident as a criminal act and called for unity in the fight against hooliganism.

He emphasized that acknowledging the incident as a crime under investigation is crucial to ensuring justice is served.

“We urge the football fraternity to support us [Ghana Police] in this effort to bring the culprits to justice. The football family must see this as a crime under investigation and nothing else.

“This will help all those affected find closure. We must use this tragic event to learn the relevant lessons and come out with a blueprint to ensure football continues to be a game people enjoy, not one where people lose their lives,” he said.
