A teenage girl has drowned after she was found in a river near a camping ground.

The body of the 12-year-old girl was found in the Broken River near Benalla, in Victoria’s north-west, around 10am on Saturday.

Emergency services including an air ambulance that left Bendigo Hospital were called to the scene, but the girl later died.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman confirmed paramedics were called to the scene following reports of an incident in the water.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman told Daily Mail Australia the girl’s death is not being treated as suspicious.

    More to come.
