Government has donated GH¢1 million to Kantamanto Market fire victims

The government has donated GH¢1 million to support victims of the devastating fire that engulfed Kantamanto Market in Accra on January 2, 2025.

The donation fulfills a promise made by President John Dramani Mahama during a courtesy call by the Kantamanto Traders Association on Thursday, January 23, 2025, according to a report by Graphic Online.

The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, presented the donation on behalf of the President, expressing the government’s sympathy for the traders who suffered significant losses.

He emphasised the need for discussions on redesigning the market to prevent such tragedies in the future and announced plans to rebuild Kantamanto into a modern, multi-purpose facility.

“There is hope. The President was elected to solve problems, and he is ready to help, devoid of politics,” he stated.

The GH¢1 million donation will be distributed among various associations within the Kantamanto Traders Association, including the Used Clothes Traders Association, Egg Sellers Association, Hairdressers Association, Platform Association, Railway No. 2 Sellers Association, Youth Clothes Sellers Association, and Shoe Sellers Association.

These groups, representing diverse traders and business owners, bore the brunt of the fire, which destroyed over 7,000 shops and displaced countless livelihoods, the report noted.

On January 2, 2025, a fire ravaged the Kantamanto Market in Accra’s Central Business District, leaving hundreds of traders displaced.
