Togo’s capital, Lomé, descended into chaos on Thursday as security forces clashed with protesters demanding the resignation of President Faure Gnassingbe.

The demonstrations were sparked by growing outrage over recent constitutional changes that critics say could entrench Gnassingbe’s grip on power indefinitely.

In one of the most defiant displays yet, hundreds of angry residents took to the streets, erecting concrete block barricades in several neighbourhoods, including Be—an opposition stronghold.

Some demonstrators b.urned tyres and hurled projectiles at the police in acts of resistance.

In response, security forces deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd, leading to tense scenes across the city.

Several protesters were reportedly arrested in Be during the crackdown.

The protests mark a growing wave of discontent against Gnassingbe, who has ruled Togo since 2005 following the d,eath of his father, Gnassingbe Eyadema.
