Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu

In a subtle response to US President Donald Trump’s warning of possible military action over alleged religious violence, Nigeria’s leadership has expressed confidence in the country’s sovereignty and announced the launch of a sweeping mechanisation programme to secure its agricultural future.

In a video sighted by GhanaWeb on November 2, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, speaking at an event, asserted that once the country is able to rely on its internal capabilities and raise its own funds, it will not be intimidated by any foreign power.

“So when oil revenue is going well, we will have no fear of whatever Trump is doing on the other side,” he said.

He added that he had approved a nationwide mechanisation initiative aimed at training and deploying modern agricultural machinery.

According to him, this was a crucial step toward achieving “food sovereignty,” emphasising that eliminating hunger is central to eradicating poverty.

“I’ve just signed off on a huge mechanisation program, every region will have a mechanised center for agricultural training and operations.

“That is our path to food sovereignty, food security. If you remove hunger from poverty, you have defeated poverty,” he stated.

The remarks come in the wake of Trump’s declaration on November 1, 2025 that he had instructed the US Department of Defense to prepare for possible military intervention in Nigeria if Christians continued to face violence.

Trump also threatened to cut off US aid unless the Nigerian government took more aggressive measures.

In response, Nigeria’s government, through its presidential spokesman, rejected what it described as coercive tactics and reaffirmed the country’s sovereign right to determine its own security policies.
