Black Stars midfielder, Thomas Partey

Sources close to Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey have expressed strong displeasure over comments made by Villarreal head coach Marcelino García on Wednesday, January 28, describing them as unfair given the player’s physical condition.

Marcelino García after Villarreal’s 3-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League criticized the performance of Thomas Partey whom he introduced in the game after his team had conceded two goals against the German team.

“Of the players who had an acceptable level, let’s say… As for Thomas, I think the Thomas we knew at Arsenal, well, there’s a world of difference. A world of difference. It’s very difficult to play in today’s football at this pace.”

“I think it’s been months, and it’s a tough time for this player to show us what he was or what he’s capable of,” Marcelino told journalists.

Reacting to Marcelino’s comments, the source revealed that Partey has been operating at “no more than 50 percent” capacity due to severe groin pain, yet continues to make himself available in order to help his team during a demanding period of the season.

Thomas Partey is also understood to be managing a knee problem alongside the groin injury.

“Marcelino is one of the best coaches in the world, but he made a mistake with these statements, knowing that Thomas is playing at 50% due to severe groin pain. And he’s playing through the pain just to help the team,” the source said.

The injuries adding to the source were significant enough to rule Thomas Partey out of Ghana’s games against Japan and South Korea in the Kirin Challenge Cup in November 2025, a decision taken to prevent further complications and allow the midfielder time to recover.

“Thomas has been playing through a knee and groin injury , a reason he was not part of Ghana’s international friendly games in Japan and Korea November last year,” the source added.

Despite his ongoing fitness struggles, Partey has remained involved at club level, a commitment the source believes deserves recognition rather than criticism.

Those close to the player insist he remains fully dedicated to Villarreal and hopes his efforts and sacrifices are acknowledged as the season progresses.
