Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey played a crucial role in Arsenal’s 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace on Wednesday night, helping the Gunners secure a spot in the semi-finals of the 2023/24 EFL Cup.

Partey, known for his versatility, started the match in an unusual role as a right-back.

Despite the positional shift, he delivered a solid performance in the opening 46 minutes before being substituted for William Saliba.

His composure and defensive contributions helped Arsenal weather an early setback and set the stage for their comeback.

Crystal Palace struck first through Jean-Philippe Mateta, who capitalized on a defensive error to give his side an early lead. Arsenal responded strongly in the second half, with Gabriel Jesus spearheading the attack.

The Brazilian forward equalized with a cheeky chip over goalkeeper Dean Henderson after being set up by Martin Odegaard.

Arsenal took the lead when Bukayo Saka’s clever assist allowed Jesus to strike again, this time with a precise finish into the bottom corner.

The Gunners extended their advantage as Odegaard and Jesus combined once more, with Jesus completing his hat-trick with a close-range finish.

Crystal Palace pulled one back late in the game when Eddie Nketiah, who came on as a substitute, converted a header from a Nathaniel Clyne cross.

However, Arsenal held firm to seal the victory and advance to the semi-finals.
