Ghanaian actor Chris Attoh has praised the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) for its initiative to provide free dialysis treatment for kidney patients.

Speaking at the NHIA head office at the launch of the initiative on November 26, 2024, Attoh pointed out the importance of such efforts in addressing kidney disease, which has claimed many lives unnecessarily.

He expressed solidarity with those suffering from kidney disease, offering encouragement and emphasising the collective responsibility to support one another.

Chris Attoh described the initiative, which was announced by the NPP flagbearer and Vice President Dr Bawumia on November 11, as “commendable.”

“Several people have suffered from kidney disease. People have died for reasons that they didn’t have to. And so when individuals, establishments, and institutions take it into their hands to make sure that Ghana is okay, however we are going to do it, it is commendable.

“And to those who are already suffering from this disease, we want you to know that we are here for you.

“I’m encouraging you in a small way. I often said ‘There’s no such thing as a bad day, because if there is, try missing one.’ We are all here, we’re all alive. And while we are, we all have a responsibility,” he said.

Attoh also mentioned the role of his Chris Attoh Foundation in caring for people and fostering unity among Ghanaians and expressed his support towards the initiative.

“We’re commending you, we’re supporting you. I’m looking forward to the space and what we can also do to slowly change things and make things better in Ghana,” he added.

Attoh’s comments come as the NHIA integrates free dialysis treatment into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) benefit package, a move expected to significantly improve access to essential care for kidney patients across Ghana.
