Award-winning dancehall artiste Stonebwoy has expressed profound grief over the tragic helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including prominent political figures and military personnel.

The incident occurred on August 6, 2025, when a Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9EH helicopter crashed in the Ashanti Region, killing all eight people on board. Among the victims were Minister of Defence Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Minister of Environment, Science and Technology Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

The tragedy sent shockwaves across Ghana, with tributes pouring in from around the world.

In an emotional interview with TV3 on August 7, 2025, Stonebwoy described the crash as a national tragedy. He revealed his personal connections to the two ministers, saying they were father figures to him.

“Honourable Murtala Mohammed was a big supporter of BHIM Nation, a father figure. The former Ashanti Regional Minister was also like family to me. It’s difficult to comprehend; waking up to the news was crazy,” he said.

He added that the timing deepened his sorrow, as August marks the 10th anniversary of his mother’s passing.

“This is the tenth year of the month my mother passed away, so I was already in a certain mood. And then all these were added on. It’s not easy,” he said.

Stonebwoy fondly recalled his relationship with the late minister, referencing an interview where the late leader publicly praised his work.

“My relationship with Alhaji Dr Murtala was like that of a father and son. We spoke on the phone many times. What actually heightened it was when he was in an interview and expressed his love and support for my brand.

“He showed that from his level as a politician, he could still appreciate reggae and dancehall while serving the nation,” he noted.

Calling for action, Stonebwoy urged the government to prioritise accident prevention.

“This isn’t just a family loss; Ghana has been hit. The state must employ measures to avoid such disasters,” he concluded.
