British-Nigerian rapper and singer Darkoo has opened up about the circumstances surrounding her exit from her former record label.

In a video shared on Instagram on August 16, 2025, Darkoo revealed that her contracts with Atlantic Records UK and Virgin Music Nigeria were terminated before their expiry date.

She explained that she was unhappy with the label, and although the termination came abruptly, it was ultimately a mutual decision.

“I was a project to do. So we didn’t carry on. That is what I’m saying, they dropped me because we didn’t finish the deal. Yeah, halfway through. We both weren’t feeling each other,” she said.

The musician further disclosed that she was dropped while working on a collaboration with Nigerian singer Ayra Starr.

According to Darkoo, the label’s decision turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to her career.

“When it happened, it almost kind of kicked me up the ass. Yeah, it was a wake-up call for me. From the moment I was out of the deal, I dropped a song with Ayra. You know, I tried everything. It was up to me to be fully independent. The decision was made for me, but it became one of the best decisions they ever made,” she added.
