Former Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has opposed assertions that Ghana, as a country, needs an economist at the helm of affairs in order to make any progress in its development process.

According to a report by adomonline.com, Professor Frimpong-Boateng made the assertion in response to claims that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who is an economist, was not given the chance to utilise his skills under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government to help transform the country.

He asserted that no single economist in the country can turn its fortunes around.

“We’ve got it stuck in our heads that an economist will magically fix everything. But let me tell you, there is no way an economist can develop Ghana.

“They say Akufo-Addo did not allow Bawumia to do his work as an economist and even struggled to get funds for some initiatives he brought on board,” he is quoted as having said on Nhyira FM’s Kukurantumi.

The former minister argued that what a country needs is a leader who can create more jobs for the teeming youth.

He opined that none of the people in the country who are known for creating jobs are economists.

“We need people who create worth and jobs. Look at our rich folks who have created jobs; none of them are economists. Those are the people we need leading Ghana,” he said.
