Ghanaian actor James Gardiner has expressed concerns about what he described as the slow pace of seriousness and professionalism within the Ghanaian movie industry.

In an interview on Hitz FM on February 14, 2025, Gardiner pointed out the stark contrast between the Ghanaian and Nigerian film industries.

He explained that the Nigerian movie industry is more structured and professional, emphasising how they approach projects with urgency and attention to detail.

“I feel there is more energy in the movie industry. The pace and the way they approach projects are very different. There is more professionalism attached to the film industry in Nigeria. Before I go on set, the executive producer would reach out, and everyone would reach out to find out the kind of food I eat and if I have any allergies. It is very structured.

“I would say the professionalism and seriousness they attach to it is different from Ghana. Because we take a lot of things for granted. We write so much about relationships, and when it comes to work, we don’t let our professionalism come into play,” he said.

He further stated that the lack of professionalism often displayed in the Ghanaian movie industry undermines its potential.

“I would say the professionalism and seriousness they attach to it is different from Ghana. We take a lot of things for granted. We write so much about relationships, but when it comes to work, we don’t bring our professionalism into play,” he explained.

James Gardiner believes the Ghanaian movie industry could thrive if producers and other stakeholders adopt a more professional attitude.

“We try to use who we know and how long we have known each other. You know our industry is not as big as that of Nigeria. I feel like we sometimes fall short. The professionalism is not 100 percent, but we know the craft; it is just the mindset and attitude that goes around it,” he added.
