Larry Madowo, CNN’s International Correspondent, and his team encountered a small hiccup while in Ghana working on a report about illicit mining operations there. They were traveling to a place in the Western Region when they came upon a road that didn’t seem to be motorable. A section of the road was flooded.A crew member stepped out of the tricycle that was transporting them, shocked and terrified.

Before navigating out of the muddy water, the trike stayed there for a few minutes. In Ghana, we traveled to the countryside to report on galamsey, or illicit small-scale gold mining. Larry Madowo responded to the incident by posting on X, “You’ll understand how hectic it was to get there when the full report airs on CNN.”

The government of Akufo-Addo has been under fire from Ghanaians for failing to

making the nation’s poor roads better and putting an end to illicit mining. Before taking office, Nana Akufo-Addo, the current president and the NPP’s presidential candidate at the time, risked his presidency to stop illicit mining.A number of measures, including Operation Halt, legislation prohibiting mining in restricted regions, and the suspension of small-scale miners’ operations, were put into place, but none of them have been able to address the fundamental problems.

Ghanaians have seen in recent years how bold illegal miners have ruthlessly destroyed forest reserves and water bodies like the Pra River and River Oti. According to the Ghana Water Company Limited, such measures have made it more difficult for some regions of the nation to have a steady supply of water, and if galamsey is not handled, the problem could get worse.

Some Ghanaians took to the streets to demonstrate against the government’s failure to take practical action to address Galamsey in response to popular outcry. To allow impacted water bodies to recuperate, some segments of the public demanded that small-scale miners’ operations be suspended. However, because Ghana benefits economically from the export and manufacture of gold in terms of foreign cash, the government has rejected this request.
