“The FIFA World Cup trophy has been stolen”, this story sounds like a myth to some contemporary football fans, but it appears to be a true story that occurred in 1966 in England.

During a public exhibition at Westminster Central Hall in London on March 20, 1966, the Jules Rimet Trophy, a gold-plated statuette, went missing.

Despite heavy security at the event, thieves outsmarted them and stole the prestigious trophy, stunning the people and disgracing the English FA.

In the course of the search, an unknown caller identified as “Jackson,” demanded £15,000 for the trophy’s return. The FA made arrangements, and a suspect was arrested.

Another suspect, Edward Betchley, a criminal, was arrested during a search by Scotland Yard but didn’t provide enough details about the trophy’s whereabouts.

After numerous failed attempts, an individual named David Corbett, who was walking with his dog Pickles in South London, realized the dog was sniffing a hedge in Beulah Hill.

Corbett followed the hedge and discovered a package wrapped in newspaper. Inside it was the Jules Rimet trophy that had gone missing for some time. Corbett received a £6,000 reward for returning the trophy.

The trophy was then returned to football authorities and was used for the 1966 World Cup, which England won on home soil at Wembley Stadium.

Corbett and his dog Pickles became global heroes in sport, celebrated for their role in recovering the trophy.
