Swedru All Blacks Football Club has earned promotion to the Ghana Premier League (GPL), a remarkable milestone in the club’s long history.

Founded in 1945 and based in Agona Swedru, Swedru All Blacks is a professional football club with deep historical roots.

In an interview with GhanaWeb’s Benjamin Sackey on SportsCheck, historian Kwaw Annam recounted how Swedru All Blacks got their iconic name.

According to him, during World War II, military personnel formed the team as a recreational activity during their free time. Over time, this casual group evolved into a cohesive football club.

After the war, the then traditional leader, Nana Ayipuah Ababio II, expressed interest in taking over the administration of the club. Although some players initially opposed the idea, they later accepted his leadership after he supported a team member who faced personal difficulties.

Annam further explained how the club’s name, “All Blacks,” was chosen. According to him, the name was inspired by a team that the players had seen competing during the war.

“Nana asked them what name they would want to give this team they were forming, and they opted for ‘All Blacks.’ They said the name reminded them of the black team that used to play against the white team at the war front,” he explained.

Initially, Nana Ayipuah Ababio II was not in favor of the club’s emblem, but he later agreed when it was explained that the emblem symbolised the warriors who had fought and sacrificed for the land.

“Nana wasn’t happy about the emblem, but it reminded the people of those who had sacrificed their lives, so Nana eventually agreed to it,” Annam added.

Swedru All Blacks’ promotion to the Ghana Premier League presents the club with a fresh opportunity to create more history and meet the high expectations of the top-flight competition.
