Basketball in Ghana has been on a steady rise, with the Spintex Knights leading the charge as they continue to gain recognition in the country.

Founded in 2018, the team made their first appearance in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) qualifiers in 2024, where they made history by reaching the Elite 16.

They became the first Ghanaian basketball team to achieve this feat, securing impressive wins in the qualifiers.

On this episode of Sports Check, Emmanuel Enin spoke with Dr. Eric Opoku-Antwi, the bankroller of the fast-rising basketball team.

Dr. Antwi shared his love for basketball and how he contributed to the sport’s growth in China, which eventually inspired him to establish the Spintex Knights upon his return to Ghana.

He revealed that his ultimate dream is to see his team compete consistently in the BAL.

In an engaging conversation on the show, the former basketball coach discussed the challenges of running a basketball team in Ghana and the broader obstacles hindering the sport’s development in the country.

Some of these challenges include a lack of funding from the sports ministry and limited infrastructure for nurturing talent.

Dr. Eric Opoku-Antwi also named the Chicago Bulls as his favorite NBA team, adding that he considers Michael Jordan the greatest basketball player of all time.
