The Power of Showing Up
One day, I sat down with a student who had been struggling for far too long. His story unraveled like a tapestry of pain—childhood wounds, broken trust, missed chances. I was moved to tears. But as I walked with him through his journey, a pattern emerged: he saw himself as life’s casualty, not its author. He believed success came from flashes of brilliance, not the quiet grind. He was always full of energy for unimportant things but had all the excuses in the world to stay away from the important ones. He got easily distracted, and waited at the last minute to burn the midnight candles, hoping for miracles. He dodged responsibility and blamed others for the bad outcomes. It intrigued me greatly as to why he couldn’t see life doesn’t reward chaos but honours rhythm. I asked him, “Are you really surprised that life keeps whispering a different truth?” He resisted, retreating into his familiar shell of excuses. But this time, I didn’t flinch. I saw his potential buried beneath the rubble. I discovered he learned best by doing, so we started small—bite-sized lessons, group discussions, ward activities. Slowly, the fog lifted. His grades improved, but more importantly, so did his self-worth. He stopped being the victim. He became the architect. When we met again recently, he smiled and said, “Pope, you were right, consistency turned my dream into reality.” And I believed him. He implored me to do a reflection on his transformation.
