The Black Stars technical bench in the last 20 years has been heavily populated by foreign coaches who brought both international experience and fresh ideas to the team.

Though the Black Stars are still chasing a trophy since 1982, most of the team’s notable achievements in the last two decades have been engineered by expatriate coaches.

From securing World Cup qualification to reaching the quarter-final stage, the Black Stars have enjoyed remarkable moments under foreign coaches, including two AFCON final appearances in 2010 and 2015.

It is also very important to note that some of Ghana’s worst Africa Cup of Nations campaigns came under foreign coaches in 2006 and 2021 respectively.

This GhanaWeb Sports feature details the statistical performance of foreign coaches who have handled the Black Stars in the last two decades.

    Ratomir Dujković (2004–2006)

Dujković led the Black Stars to their first-ever World Cup qualification in 2006, where the team reached the Round of 16. The Black Stars were eliminated after losing 3-0 to Brazil.

He also qualified the team for the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations but the Black Stars were eliminated from the group stages.

    Claude Le Roy (2006–2008)

Claude Le Roy’s tenure as Black Stars coach included leading Ghana to the semi-finals of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.

He also led Ghana to its highest-ever FIFA World Ranking of 14th in February 2008, before stepping down in May that year.

Milovan Rajevac – First Stint (2008–2010)

Milovan led Ghana to the final of the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, where the team finished as runners-up.

He made history by becoming the first coach to guide the Black Stars to the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup in 2010.

    Avram Grant (2014–2017)

Avram Grant’s major achievement as Black Stars coach was leading the team to the final of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The team lost to Ivory Coast on penalties.

Milovan Rajevac – Second Stint (2021–2022)

Milovan’s second stint was marked by a poor run in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

He also oversaw a winless campaign at the 2021 AFCON, which ended with a group-stage exit.

Meanwhile, watch as Ghanaians debate the performance of Black Stars coach Otto Addo
