Former Asante Kotoko board member Alhaji Abu Lamine believes the poor fundamentals of football in the country are affecting the progress of the Black Stars.

The senior national team has struggled to perform at major tournaments. At the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Cameroon, the Black Stars were eliminated in the group phase.

The team was hoping to make a statement at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but also suffered elimination in the group phase.

The woes of the Black Stars were compounded after suffering a third group phase elimination at the 2023 AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast.

Speaking to Asempa FM, Abu Lamine blamed the poor fundamentals for the struggles of the senior national team.

“We went to Cameroon, and we failed to perform. The same thing happened in Qatar. We were hoping to do better in Ivory Coast, but we failed again,” he said.

“There is something fundamentally wrong with our game, and it is about time we fix it.”

He further called on the government to invest in fixing the fundamentals of the game.

“We will need the government to step in to help our game,” Abu Lamine said.

“In the past, we had the government supporting coaches and our game in general, but it is not happening anymore.

“I believe we have to go back and fix the game by involving the government. The fundamentals must be fixed to help revive our game,” he added.

The Black Stars will not compete at the 2025 AFCON tournament for the first time in two decades after recording three defeats and three draws during the qualifiers.
