Jean Mensah, Chairperson of Electoral Commission Jean Mensah, Chairperson of Electoral Commission

New Patriotic Party (NPP) communicator Patrick Awuku has blamed the Electoral Commission (EC) for what he describes as a dangerous failure to safeguard the democratic process.

The by-election, held across 19 polling stations, has been rocked by violence, with disturbing reports of machete-wielding thugs and heavily armed men disrupting voting.

Speaking on this, Awuku said he is outraged at the EC’s inability to prevent such threats. “I blame the EC. The blood of those who will die or get hurt out of this election will cry on the heads of the EC,” he warned, shocked by the kinds of weapons being seen on the ground.

“Some of the guns and machetes are heavier than those used by the Ghana army,” he added.

Furthermore, Awuku criticized civil society organisations (CSOs), traditional rulers, and other community leaders for turning a blind eye to the incidents.

“These people should remain silent if the tables turn,” he said, pointing to what he sees as selective concern and silence when political violence affects certain groups.

He added, “If this is the democracy that we want to practice, then it’s very pitiful,” he lamented.
