    Throwback Thursday: The magic of ‘Anansesem’

    The movie revolves around Addey, a lorry driver who plies his trade between Accra and his village, Kukurantumi.

    After losing his job, Addey plots to marry his daughter, Abena, to an affluent businessman to improve his financial situation.

    However, Abena is in love with Bob, a poor young man, and the two elope to Accra.

    The film explores the contrasts between rural and urban life in Ghana, highlighting the tensions between traditional values and modernisation.

    Some themes of the movie include:

    – Cultural Identity: The struggle between traditional rural life and modern urban life;

    – Love and Financial Security: Abena’s dilemma between her love for Bob and her father’s desire for her to marry a wealthy man;

    – Poverty and Survival: Addey’s struggles to make ends meet and provide for his family;

    The movie had some veteran actors, including the likes of the late Evans Oma Hunter, Amy Appiah, David Dontoh, Ernest Youngman, amongst others.

    Overall, “Kukurantumi” is a thought-provoking film that explores the complexities of Ghanaian society and culture, and is a great addition to your watch list this weekend.
