The Kinbu terminal of the Aayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in the Central Business District of Accra has become the centre of growing tension following an alleged illegal takeover by a group said to be linked to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and some alleged members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The Aayalolo BRT project, introduced in 2016 under the management of the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) and supervised by the Ministry of Local Government, was designed to ease urban transportation challenges across the regional capitals.

The system operates major terminals at Adenta, Achimota, Ofankor, Amasaman and Kinbu.

However, since December’s general elections, the Kinbu terminal which was until recently under GAPTE’s control has reportedly been occupied by a group of individuals allegedly claiming affiliation with the AMA and the NDC.

The group has since been collecting daily tolls from vehicles using the car park while using parts of the terminal for bulk-breaking operations, where cargo trucks offload goods.

The Kinbu terminal, until recently, was not available to GAPTE”

The development, according to GAPTE sources, has resulted in severe sanitation, safety and operational challenges.

The influx of casual labourers and alleged drug users into the area has led to open defecation, petty theft including theft of bus parts and congestion within the terminal.

Despite GAPTE continuing to shoulder the maintenance, cleaning and utility costs of the terminal, funds collected by the group over the past 10 months have reportedly not been accounted for.

The situation escalated on Monday morning, November 10, 2025, when officials from National Security were called in to restore order.

The group, however, allegedly resisted, claiming they were “party boys” who “need to eat.”

With growing concerns over security and sanitation, stakeholders are calling for urgent government intervention to restore control of the facility to GAPTE and ensure the safety of commuters and staff.

The Aayalolo BRT, once hailed as a transformative project for Accra’s public transport system, now faces mounting challenges that threaten to undermine its operations and the broader vision for sustainable urban mobility in the capital.

Reliable information available to Classfmonline.com has it that the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority is making frantic efforts to put a DVLA office in the terminal with GAPTE’s accreditation.
