Ghana’s senior women’s national football team, the Black Queens, are trapped in a tense situation in the United Arab Emirates, according to Assistant Coach Ronnie Bergdahl.

He recounted a terrifying missile alert that forced the team to evacuate their 23-story hotel in Sharjah. “Not every morning you expect to run down 23 floors due to a missile warning,” Bergdahl posted on social media. The incident was accompanied by a loud bang, as airspace in the region was closed.

The Black Queens were in the UAE for a preparatory camp ahead of their upcoming fixtures. The Ghana FA has not yet released further details, but regional instability has been escalating. According to the UN, the UAE has seen rising security tensions recently, raising concerns for international visitors.

The Black Queens had a standout performance at the 2026 Pink League Cup in the UAE, winning their group with two dominant 4-0 victories—first against Hong Kong and then against Russia—finishing with eight goals and no conceded. Their final group match against Tanzania was canceled due to regional instability. Forward Doris Boaduwaa won the Golden Boot with three goals, while goalkeeper Cynthia Findiib Konlan took the Golden Glove for keeping a perfect clean sheet. This strong showing under coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren signals real momentum for the team ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
