Palm oil (R) importers have been advised to obtain permit before importation Palm oil (R) importers have been advised to obtain permit before importation

The Tree Crop Development Authority (TCDA) has issued a directive mandating all importers of Crude Palm Oil (CPO), Crude Palm Olein, and Palm Olein (refined vegetable oil) to register and obtain a permit from the authority before engaging in any importation activities.

This bold step aims to strengthen regulation and streamline operations within Ghana’s vital oil palm sector.

These directives, which take effect from July 14, 2025, are anchored in the Tree Crops Development Authority Act, 2019 (Act 1010), and the TCDA Legislative Instrument LI 2471.

This applies to all actors and entities operating within the oil palm value chain, from importers and processors to traders.

The oil palm industry plays a critical role in Ghana’s agricultural economy, providing employment for thousands of smallholder farmers and processors, and contributing significantly to the country’s agro-industrial ambitions.

However, the unregulated importation of palm oil products has posed challenges to local producers, including market distortion and quality control issues.
