The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has criticised Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, for his dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) and his heated confrontation with the Head of the Accident and Emergency Department at the facility.

In response to the incident which has attracted public attention, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), the mother body representing the medical profession, expressed that the minister’s actions were an “abuse of power”.

The GMA explained that the manner in which the dismissal was carried out was offensive, adding that it did not adhere to the proper procedures required by law.

“The GMA strongly condemns the unfortunate treatment of the doctors at the Emergency unit of the Hospital during the visit by the Minister of Health and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North and subsequent dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Hospital.

“The manner in which the dismissal was carried out is an affront to due process and abuse of power by the Hon. Minister of Health. The GMA stands in solidarity with our colleagues in the wake of these injustices being perpetuated,” this was contained in a statement dated Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

Signed by the President of the GMA, Dr Frank Serebour, and the General Secretary, Dr Richard Selormey, the statement further condemned the public interrogation of a patient’s death by the minister.

The GMA emphasised that such actions could expose the health facility to legal risks as they believe the minister’s conduct violated patient’s confidentiality.

“The ill-informed media audit of the death of the patient raises serious issues of breach of patient confidentiality, exposes the facility to medico-legal risks and prejudges the issue even before the matter is duly investigated. Indeed, the doctors have already been tried in the court of public opinion.”

The association is therefore demanding an unequivocal apology from the minister to the staff of the health facility.

They also urged the hospital to ensure that due processes are followed in order to ascertain the true circumstances surrounding the patient’s death and address the grievances of the bereaved family.

“The Ghana Medical Association therefore demands an unqualified apology from the Minister of Health and the Member of Parliament for Tamale North for the unwarranted attack on the staff involved,” the statement added.
