Sydney Airport is about to undergo its first major upgrade in over 30 years.

The T2 Domestic terminal’s $200million renovation will include updated facilities and a faster check-in process that will take less than 15 minutes.

The transformation will include a brand-new layout for the busy terminal, more self-serve check-in kiosks and faster security lanes.

Employing new bag drop technology, the estimated 17million passengers who use the domestic terminal each year can speed up their departures.

Currently, the terminal processes 1,500 bags per hour during peak times but the upgrade will mean this will jump to 1,800 bags per hour by 2026.

’95 per cent of passengers will travel from the kerbside to airside in less than 15 minutes’, Sydney Airport said in a statement.

Sydney Airport CEO Scott Charlton said the changes will make the terminal one of the ‘fastest and most efficient in Australia’.

‘These upgrades will not only transform security performance but will also support future demand, ensuring that Australia’s busiest airport terminal can accommodate the significant growth in passenger numbers we’re forecasting,’ he said.

‘These significant upgrades build on a series of improvements made over the past 12 months at T2.

‘Including the opening of the first Australian domestic airport department store in December 2023, new food, beverage and retail offerings.

‘All designed to enhance the passenger experience and elevate the journey from start to finish.’

The transformation, due to be completed by the end of March 2025, will have seven processing lanes spanning 26metres and include upgraded security technology and ‘state-of-the-art scanners’.

Making it even more faster and convenient for travellers is that the ‘next-generation security technology’ which will permit items like laptops and liquids to remain in carry-on luggage.

With this major change, each security lane will be capable of processing 500 travellers every hour.

And in welcome news for many passengers, there will be family and assistance security lanes, as well as two elevators on the other side of security for easier access to the food court and gates.

Mr Charlton said Sydney Airport is ‘working hard’ to minimise disruptions and to make sure the terminal stays operational throughout the update.
