The General Secretary of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), Charles Osei Asibey, has called on President-elect John Dramani Mahama to invest in sports infrastructure in the country.

According to him, the outgoing government, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, constructed some infrastructure projects to support the competition during the 2023 African Games hosted in Ghana.

Asibey urged Mahama to complete the remaining projects and also initiate new ones to enhance the sports infrastructure.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Joy FM, Asibey encouraged the President-elect to invest in athlete development to discover more talents to represent the nation.

“Those of us involved in sports, whether as players or administrators, are hoping for a productive four-year term. The previous government made progress through the African Games, providing us with some infrastructure. This new government should build on that foundation and promote athlete development.

“If we have infrastructure but lack quality athletes, we won’t be able to host international competitions successfully. We need to aim for excellence. We wish them success and we hope that in the upcoming years, Ghanaian athletes across all sports will excel internationally and bring more accolades to Ghana,” he said.

Meanwhile, John Mahama is set to be inaugurated into office on January 7, 2024, following a resounding victory in the general elections.
