The Member of Parliament for Suame and legal counsel for the Minority, John Darko, has raised serious concerns over the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama, describing it as a direct threat to the independence of Ghana’s judiciary.
His comments follow a large protest held on Monday, May 5, by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and allied opposition groups, demanding the reinstatement of the Chief Justice and denouncing what they see as executive overreach.
Speaking on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV, Mr. Darko said the demonstration was a reflection of widespread public discontent with the government’s actions.
“The people of Ghana actually called for this. They wanted to show their disapproval of what has been going on, and they came in their numbers to tell the government,” he said.
According to him, the turnout clearly demonstrated that Ghanaians were unhappy with what he called the “subjugation of the judiciary under the wings of the executive.”
“You don’t want that in a democracy,” he warned, adding that judicial independence is a non-negotiable pillar of constitutional governance and must not be compromised by political expediency.
The protest is part of growing backlash against the President’s decision, which has sparked debates among legal experts, civil society organisations, and political leaders about its constitutionality and broader implications for the rule of law in Ghana.
