The Member of Parliament of Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has described the ongoing developments surrounding the suspension of four MPs by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, as an act of oppression.

Clad in all black with a red band wrapped around his head, Assafuah spoke to the press in solidarity with the other New Patriotic Party Minority MPs supporting their suspended colleagues. He expressed his concern over what he described as the Speaker’s attempts to subject them to oppressive treatment.

According to him, the country, renowned for its democratic nature, prides itself on its constitutional supremacy, which grants the constitution the highest authority within the legal system.

Assafuah, however, raised concerns about how recent developments and decision-making in Parliament are steering the country down a dangerous path.

He cautioned that this could lead to the emergence of a potential speakership supremacy.

“We are resisting oppressors rule and it is as simple as that. We have a constitutional democracy, constitutional supremacy but we do not have speakership supremacy,” he said in Parliament on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) stormed Parliament House clothed in black and red apparel ahead of the sitting on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

The Minority Caucus MPs protested the suspension of three of their members by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, over the chaos that was experienced during the ministerial vetting on January 30, 2025.

The NPP has described the speaker’s decision as illegal, adding that it breaches the constitution.
