A press conference held by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, has sparked widespread debate, with some citizens divided over her comments regarding the process for her potential removal.

“Processes against my removal break every rule on how justice is delivered in Ghana. This is why I find the need to draw the nation’s attention to the serious violation of the Constitution and the danger it holds for our democracy,” she said.

The conference, which addressed recent judicial controversies surrounding her suspension over alleged misconduct, has become a focal point of public discussion.

Some citizens, speaking to GhanaWeb on Thursday, June 26, 2025, remarked, “The Chief Justice’s removal is political. We heard President Mahama suggest the court is packed with NPP people and that his appointees should prepare to take over. It’s political.”

Maame Tiwaa added, “If they have valid grounds for her removal, they should make it public. I think it was appropriate for her to address the nation.”

However, critics have questioned the timing and appropriateness of her public comments.

Randy, another Ghanaian, said, “She shouldn’t have held a press conference while under investigation. President Mahama is just following due process as outlined in the Constitution.”

Meanwhile, some legal analysts have warned that parts of her statement may risk influencing ongoing proceedings, while others are concerned about the potential impact on judicial independence.
