Legendary Ghanaian footballer, Sulley Muntari Legendary Ghanaian footballer, Sulley Muntari

Having played alongside some of Ghana’s finest midfielders, Sulley Ali Muntari had the difficult job of ranking his former teammates.

Muntari, who morphed from a winger to an accomplished central midfielder, was handed the arduous task of ranking his former colleagues – Stephen Appiah, Laryea Kingston, Michael Essien, Anthony Annan, and himself.

In an interview with TV, Muntari picked his former skipper, Stephen Appiah, for the number one position, Essien as number two, Laryea Kingston as number three, himself as number four, and Anthony Annan as the fifth choice.

In the same interview, Sulley Muntari aired his views about the Ghana Premier League and the state of Ghana football.

While he described his experience at Hearts of Oak as amazing due to the support he enjoyed from fans and the president of the club, the former Inter Milan midfielder is worried about the state of the league and is making moves to get some funds to support the product.

“I enjoyed it. Hearts fans and the president were amazing. The league is a big hole where they are dumping money. There is no future for the local league. I am hoping I can get some funds and really help them. It’s a mess. When I was there, it was a mess. Maybe now it is worse. If we don’t help these guys, we won’t get the top players,” he said.

Talking about the sanitation and welfare of players, Sulley Muntari lamented the poor conditions of the facilities which prevented him from sitting in the dressing rooms.

“The changing rooms smell. That respect is not there. I didn’t even want my laundry done. I would take it home. When you get into changing rooms, they smell bad. It is not just one team. Everybody,” he said.

Sulley Muntari spent a year at Hearts of Oak where he played 15 times, scoring once and providing two assists.

His outstanding performance led to calls for him to be called to the Black Stars.

The former Portsmouth and AC Milan midfielder retired in 2022 following the expiration of his contract with Hearts of Oak.
